Cache is near the Black Mountain fire lookout north of Idyllwild. Follow the Black Mountain road from highway 243 about 5 miles to the Boulder Basin campground turnoff. Road is dirt but 4 wheel drive is not required. Park at the campground then walk the gated road to the fire lookout. When road turns back northward you're near the cache. Follow GPS cross country a bit. Cache is in a smallish cookie tin under a very large bolder. See photos below. After finding the cache continue up to the fire lookout. I believe it's occupied on weekends only. The view is quite good! The Boulder Basin campground is very nice too. It's one of our favorite places to get out of the summertime heat.
