A little desert day trip out east. Drive through Cottonwood campground, 4 campters and 1 tent. Both loops open. Walk up Cottonwood wash from the main road. Old wagon route bypassing the drop-off is interesting. I didn't know was here. Qantas flight 11 to JFK flies over about 2 hours late. Drive on to Desert Center and up the Eagle Mtn road. The solar plant is quite large. Sardines for lunch in Desert Center. Pretty day on the desert. Would be nice to be camping but days are too short and nights too cold. Home at 3p.

Quick Anza-Borrego overnight trip departing house 11:05p. Gas $2.79 at Red Earth. Stop at Truckhaven and i'm saddened to see the ocotillo has blown over. This ocotillo has been my friend for over 30 years. Sardines for lunch at Ella Wash overlook. Arrive Ella Wash site 1:45p. Drive 72 miles. Temp 95° at 2p. Wind calm. Nice quiet afternoon. Getting 3 bars LTE service at campsite. Usually have to climb hill to get spotty 1x connection. Sunset 6:15p with 89° temp. Instant noodle bowl for dinner. Nice bright ISS pass caught me by surprise. Listen to Music for 18 Musicians by Steve Reich while sitting under the stars. Sleep outside without tent. Early Saturday morning before sunrise a kit fix visits and is curious about me. She was only an arm-length away from my face. I almost could have touched her. I give her some water. Sunrise 6:45a. 73° overnight low temp. Depart camp 7:40a. Only one camper at Pegleg marker. Ride 27 miles Borrego Valley loop. (See above.) Relax a bit at Pegleg marker before driving home. Home about 12:30p. 89 miles today, 161 miles trip total.

Fly to Washington DC on Friday and meet up with Kai at Dulles airport. Two days visiting monuments and museums and also the Landmark music festival on Sunday as Kai's VIP guests. On Monday fly to Boston for a couple of days before flying home on Wednesday.

Wind 25 MPH from top of hill. Sunset 7:35p, temp 89°. Try to find comet C/2014 Q1 low in west after sunset but was UTL. Sardines and canned beans for dinner. Too windy to set up tent so sleep in jeep for a while. At 2a wind died down so put sleeping bag outside next to jeep. Sunrise 6:01a Thursday. 78° overnight low temp. Ride 21.2 miles along S22. (See above.) Drive 71 miles today, 146 miles trip total.

Hike tramway to San Jacinto peak. Nice clear day but kind of chilly and windy at the peak. I'm certainly slowing down. Took 2 hours 3 minutes to summit hut. My PR time only 3 years ago was 1 hour 38 minutes. The track isn't quite right as i accidentally had the GPS turned off for a couple of miles on the way down.

Quick overnight trip to Anza-Borrego departing house a bit after 10a Tuesday. 19444 odo. Was planning to have lunch at In-N-Out but was way too busy. Buy a famous star at Carl's instead. They are installing a traffic light at hwy 86 and S22. Drive through Truckhaven and Ella Wash sites. No Pegleg campers. Arrive Coyote Canyon site 2p. Temp 92° with a bit of high thin overcast and light breeze. Sunset 7:25p. 85°. Can corn, Beanee Weenee, and kippers for dinner. Breezy evening but not too bad. Gusty winds most of night with 70° overnight low. Sunrise 6:30a Wednesday. Depart camp 7:30a and drive up canyon and over the bypass road. First time i've driven the bypass as i never felt comfortable doing it in my Tacoma but the jeep did it just fine. Good flow of water at 2nd and 3rd crossings. Short break at Ella overlook on way home. Gas $3.59 at Red Earth. Lunch at In-N-Out on way home.

Deviled ham and crackers for lunch at Christmas Circle. Stores at Stagecoach Trails, Butterfield, and Agua Caliente are all open. Drive through Bow Willow. 2 sites occupied. Egg Mtn at 1:30p. Wind 12 gusting to 20. Arrive Carrizo Valley site 2p, 78°. Wind 8 gusting to 12. Drive 144 miles today. Dust experiment is gone but there are still some glass marbles at the site. Sunset 6:08p, 74°. Wind calm after sunset. Noodle bowl and kippers for dinner. Keeping warm with propane heater. In bed around 10p, 64°.
Thursday: Calm night. Slept well. Sunrise 6:20a, 54° overnight low. Leave tent set up and depart camp 8:10a. Egg Mtn to check email. Drive up Carrizo Gorge to the end. 6.8 miles one way. Meet Bill camped at end of road. Take break at Carrizo Badlands overlook. Ride Across California cyclists riding today. I saw them here one year ago. Buy beer (Pacifico) and ice at Agua Caliente store. Sardines for lunch along wash across from Canebrake. Back to camp at 12:30p, 80°. Drive 52 miles today. Nice quiet afternoon. No sahara mustard to be seen. Sunset 6:08p, 78°. Beanee Weenees and can corn for dinner.
Friday: Another calm night. Sunrise 6:20a, 57° overnight low. Depart camp 8a. Cyclists are climbing the Butterfield grade. The wildflowers along Henderson Canyon road are all brown now. 2 campers at Pegleg. Gas $2.99 at Red Earth. Home about 11:30a. Drive 134 miles today, 330 miles trip total.

Beanee Weenees and can corn for dinner. Canopus. In bed around 9:20p. A pickup truck drives by southbound around 10p. Overcast sky Wednesday morning. Low temp 67°. Sunrise about 7a. The pickup that drove by last night is camped a bit south of me. He was very quiet. Didn't even realize he was there until i saw truck from hill. Depart camp 8:30a and drive to Pegleg monument. Ride 23.7 mile Borrego Valley loop. [See above.] Relax a bit after ride before driving home. Home 12:45p. Drive 87 miles today, 202 miles trip total.
