Cool cloudy breezy day. Good day for driving trip. Depart house 8a, 1164 odo. Drive up Berdoo Canyon. Road in pretty good shape. Even the one tight spot seemed easy. Maybe just easier in the Jeep. Ryan campground about 1/4 full. Looked like was going to be a cold night for the campers. 52° at Key's View and windy. Belle and White Tank campgrounds both open. Sardine lunch at Georgia's rocks. Black Eagle road to first rocks. Road freshly graded. I was first vehicle. Cottonwood campground only a few campers. Both loops open. Drive out via Pinkham Canyon road and the cutover to Thermal Canyon. Stopped at the world's tallest Mojave yucca and took a picture. First trip to AB in the Jeep. Lots of campers in offroad area east of park. No one was there 2 weeks ago. Drive up Rockhouse Canyon road all the way to end of Butler Canyon. Almost get to fence in Rockhouse Canyon but a boulder was blocking road. Could probably have squeezed by but no reason. Talked to a ranger just above the Noll point. Said he was looking for something and that he probably wasn't going to find it. Odd. Drive to Font's Point and then Short Trail to Ella Wash. Temp 85° at 3p. Light breeze. Tarantula crossing the wash. Don't think i've ever seen tarantulas here before. Sunset 5:38p. Wind calm. Have very good cellphone (voice and data) from hill. Don't usually get good reception here. Temp 75° at 7p. Sitting under the stars waiting for the moonrise listening to techno music on satellite radio. In tent at 9p as moon is rising. Perfectly calm still night. 65° overnight low. Two nights camping and exploring in the Mojave Desert. Drove up via Amboy and camped a few miles east of Kelso. Very nice afternoon and evening. Was surprised to see clouds low over the Providence Mtns the next morning. Tuesday stopped Sunrise Rock and Nipton then got gas in Searchlight, Nevada. Drove the Mojave Road westward from hwy 95 over the Piute Mtns to Lanfair Valley for the first time. I think i've driven all of the "drivable" Mojave Road now. Drove through Mid Hills (sad the area hasn't recovered well after the 2005 fire) and down the Macedonia Canyon road. Spent my second night at Cadiz. Home via Milligan, hwy 62, 177, I10.
City/canyon loop taking 1 hour 10 minutes.
Hike Shannon to Smoketree Mtn.
Cathedral Canyon, Landau, Vista Chino, Palm Canyon taking 1 hour 5 minutes.
Spent two nights camping in the southern Anza-Borrego desert at my regular Carrizo Valley site. Absolutely perfect conditions the entire time. Crystal clear sky, no wind, warm, quiet. Could not have been better. Drove to Ocotillo for ice. Pleased to see the market is open again and they even have wifi now. Also the wind turbines don't look as bad as i was expecting. The turbines themselves are kind of graceful and there is still lots of untouched desert. But of course i'd rather they were not there at all. Tuesday morning hiked the Mtn Palm Springs loop and in the evening spotted a very thin crescent moon (barely naked eye) near Mercury (binoculars only). Wednesday on my way home did a 19.5 mile ride from Borrego Springs. I love the AB desert.

Got .6 miles into a ride and rear tire went flat again. Yesterday's patch didn't hold. (I think there were actually 2 holes and the second hole was right on edge of the patch.) Also found the spare tube i carry on my bike was cracked and worthless. Walked home.
Drive to Banning and park at fire station. Ride west on Ramsey, north on Beaumont Ave, east on Brookside, loop around Highland Springs, then back to Banning on Wilson. Pretty nice loop taking 1 hour 25 minutes. Another pinch flat on rear tire at about mile 8. Patched tube. Second flat in two consecutive rides.

Swing through Borrego Springs before driving home.

Camp at the Mahogany Flats campground Wednesday and then climb Telescope Peak on Thursday. Had the campground and the entire hike all to myself. Not really a very interesting hike but the views from the summit are outstanding. I lost my ridiculously expensive Fisher Space Pen and replaced it with a Zebra F-301 Compact pen. Not only is the cost of the Zebra pen a fraction of what the Space Pen costs i find i actually like the Zebra better. (Space Pens are $24 each but you get 2 Zebra pens for about $3.) The Zebra pocket clip actually works and the writing is very clean and smooth with a finer line than the Space Pen. Maybe the Zebra can't actually write on butter or in zero gravity but so far i have not had to encounter those obstacles to writing.
City/canyon loop taking 1 hour 6 minutes.

Tramway second day in a row.
